Be a drop in the wave of change.
As part of of our overall environmental impact assessment…BVC believe that blanket prophylactic parasite treatments are inappropriate and there should be more restrictions on the sale of small animal parasiticides especially Fipronil an environmentally highly toxic chemical which is causing significant damage (and in our opinion should be banned).
We believe risk assessment should form part of the prescribing of these preventatives with more diagnostic tests as part of this assessment, and prevention aimed at the parasites with minimal effect on non-target invertebrates.
Traditional year round, broad-spectrum treatments may or may not be ideal for your situation and the environment. We believe that sustainable parasite control is our ethical responsibility.Overuse drives parasite resistance and threatens our ability to use them effectively long term.
The Cross-Party Pharmaceuticals in the Environment Group (CPiE) was established in 2023.Fipronil and Imidacloprid have been banned in farm animal and agriculture use. For small animal parasiticide development, environmental exposure testing is not required as risk from dogs and cats is presumed to be negligible, but this has been shown to be wrong (Rosemary Perkins 20204 BSAVA). Recognising the risks of reducing parasiticide use on the patient, client and public health all needs consideration.
A smarter approach to parasiticide use is a risk-assessed prevention systemi.e. treat for the risk that is present.
